A podcast that redefines what it means to be informed in your pregnancy and birth.
Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful condition that affects 1 in 7 women during their reproductive years. While it is primarily known for causing severe pelvic pain and heavy menstrual periods, endo can also lead to significant gut issues and bowel problems. Women with endometriosis often experience symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and painful bowel movements, which can severely impact their quality of life. These gastrointestinal problems can sometimes be misdiagnosed or overlooked, this can add to the frustration and suffering of endometriosis.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. IBS is characterised by abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits, like constipation or diarrhea. Think of it as the gut getting overly sensitive and reacting strongly to things like stress, certain foods, or hormonal changes. Many women with endometriosis experience IBS-like symptoms.
When I work with women who have endometriosis and are experiencing gut-related symptoms, I often use techniques similar to those I use for clients with IBS, with a few adjustments. Many people are familiar with the FODMAP diet, and while I still use this for some clients, it may not be the best fit for everyone. Many people find it challenging to manage restrictive diets, so over the past year, I have been using a different method with great success.
The method is called REVIBE, a holistic nutritional and lifestyle-based strategy designed to manage symptoms of IBS and, in turn, support women with gut-related endometriosis symptoms. The REVIBE method was developed by dietitian, Elissa Robins, and the program goes beyond traditional elimination diets and focuses on six key principles which are:
R: Rhythm & routine
E: Eating Mindfully
V: Variety of Fibres
I: Irritant load
B: Beneficial Bacteria
E: Elimination Diet
By addressing these areas, the REVIBE program helps clients manage their IBS symptoms while maintaining a healthy relationship with food and improving their overall quality of life. It is particularly beneficial for those who have found traditional diets, like the low FODMAP diet, challenging or unsuitable due to lifestyle constraints or other medical conditions. The REVIBE method supports clients experiencing IBS-C, IBS-D, or IBS-M, and the intervention is tailored accordingly. It adopts a stepwise approach using low-risk changes, ensuring a gradual and manageable process for clients.
By sharing this approach, I hope to offer practical solutions and support for those struggling with both endometriosis and gut issues. Together, we can work towards a better understanding and management of this complex condition, ultimately improving your quality of life.
